Sclera & Strength - Strength in every step
Monday 23rd Mar
In January 2023, my life changed in a way I never expected.
That’s when I was diagnosed with systemic scleroderma—a rare and complex disease that affects my lungs and gastrointestinal tract. Along with that came interstitial lung disease (ILD) and Raynaud’s phenomenon.
This isn’t just a diagnosis—it’s something I live with every single day.
I deal with chronic pain, shortness of breath, and severe fatigue, just to name a few of the challenges. Some days are harder than others, but one thing remains the same—I keep going.
Because I have no choice.
As a nurse, I’ve spent my life caring for others. Now, I find myself navigating life on the other side of care—learning what it means to show up not just for others, but for myself.
And the truth is… not all illnesses are visible.
I can show up. I can smile. I can push through.
But that doesn’t mean I’m not fighting a battle you can’t see.
That’s something I wish more people understood.
Just because someone looks okay doesn’t mean they are okay.
But I’m not doing this alone.
I’m incredibly blessed to have an amazing support system—family and friends who stand beside me, lift me up, and remind me of my strength even on the hardest days.
And that’s exactly why I’m choosing to walk.
I’m walking to raise awareness for this rare condition.
I’m walking to give a voice to those who feel unseen.
I’m walking to help bring understanding to a disease that many people have never even heard of.
This year, I created my team Sclera & Strength because that’s what this journey has become—strength in the face of something that tries to take it from you.
Strength in showing up.
Strength in continuing forward.
Strength in every single step.
If you’ve ever wondered how you can support someone like me—this is it.

This walk is part of the Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma event happening April 18, 2026 in Durham, NC—bringing together patients, families, and supporters to raise awareness and fund research for this rare disease.
Walk with me.
Stand with me.
Learn with me.
Because awareness matters.
Because understanding matters.
Because every step brings us closer to something better.
💚

Strength in every step.
