Scleroderma became a part of my life that I never asked for or expected. It’s a rare autoimmune disease that can affect so much more than just the skin, and like a lot of people, I had no idea what scleroderma really was until it became personal.

I have systemic scleroderma, also known as systemic sclerosis, which means the disease can affect not only the skin, but also blood vessels and internal organs. There is currently no cure, and because scleroderma can look so different from person to person, there is still so much we need to learn about it.

I was diagnosed two years ago, while still in my 20s. Scleroderma is most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 40 and 50, so receiving a diagnosis this young was something I never imagined I would have to navigate. At a time in my life when I was supposed to be thinking about my future, I suddenly had to learn how to live with a rare, lifelong disease and all of the uncertainty that can come with it.

That’s a huge part of why this walk means so much to me. I’m walking not only for myself, but for everyone living with scleroderma and for the hope that one day, someone receiving this diagnosis won’t have to face the same uncertainty.
